Zelenskyy Says Russia Keeps Attacking While U.S. Holds Back Help
Ukraine's president says missile and drone strikes continue as the U.S. delays supplies and cuts off key satellite data.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Russia launched another round of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine overnight. He said his country got no warning from its allies before the strikes hit. Zelenskyy also said the United States has been holding back important supplies and cutting off satellite technology that Ukraine needs to defend itself.
The attacks hit energy buildings and other important structures across Ukraine. Zelenskyy said a medical clinic, a school, a metro station, and regular apartment buildings were also struck. These kinds of attacks on everyday places have become common during Russia's full-scale invasion, which began about four and a half years ago.
Zelenskyy has accused the U.S. of limiting the intelligence, or secret information, it shares with Ukraine. He said there have also been delays in certain types of vital supplies from the U.S. Department of Defense, which he called the Department of War. He did not give many details about what supplies were being held back or why.
One big concern for Ukraine is a satellite system called Starshield. It is a more powerful military version of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite network. Ukraine uses it to track and shoot down Russian drones. Zelenskyy said last Saturday that Ukraine could no longer use Starshield properly to stop drone attacks.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pushed back on that claim. He said the slowdown in service was not done on purpose. He stated that nobody ordered Starlink speeds to be slowed down and that service had been restored, but he did not explain clearly what had caused the problem.
Ukraine's top diplomat in the U.S., Denys Sienik, said his country had still not received any official answer from the Pentagon or SpaceX. He said Ukraine had not gotten confirmation that full satellite speeds were back or that Starshield was working the way it used to. That left Ukrainian officials unsure whether the problem had truly been fixed.
President Trump and Zelenskyy have also been trading sharp words with each other. Over the weekend, Trump posted on social media that Zelenskyy does not want to end the war and that Ukraine was in very bad shape. He argued that Zelenskyy could have made a better peace deal two years ago.
Zelenskyy strongly disagreed and posted that Ukraine never wanted this war. He said Ukraine had supported every real effort to end the fighting. He blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for refusing to stop the attacks and for continuing to escalate the war.
Trump has also eased some of the economic penalties, called sanctions, that the U.S. had placed on Russia. Those sanctions were meant to put financial pressure on Moscow to stop the war. Zelenskyy warned that loosening sanctions only makes Russia stronger and more willing to keep fighting.
Just over a week ago, Trump announced that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to stop hitting each other's energy buildings. But neither country said they had agreed to any such deal, and new Russian strikes on oil refineries were reported within hours. Zelenskyy said Russia's answer to every peace effort has been more attacks.
"Ukraine never wanted this war."
