Xavier Becerra Wins California Governor Primary
The former health secretary will face either a Democrat or Republican in November's election.
Xavier Becerra has won California's primary election for governor. He will compete in the November general election to become the state's next leader. Becerra was behind in the polls for months but came from behind to win. Election workers are still counting votes to see who he will face in November.
Becerra might face Democrat Tom Steyer or Republican Steve Hilton in the fall election. Both men are waiting to see who gets the second spot. Becerra called his victory a 'Hollywood ending' that few people expected. Just a few months ago, he was only getting 3% support in polls.
Many people in his own party wanted him to quit the race. They thought other candidates had a better chance of winning. But Becerra decided to keep fighting. 'The underdog stayed in the fight,' he told his supporters on election night.
Tom Steyer is an environmental activist who cares about climate change. He supports ideas like healthcare for everyone and higher taxes on very rich people like himself. Steyer ran for president in 2020 but did not win. He spent over $200 million of his own money on TV ads for this race.
Steve Hilton used to work in politics in the United Kingdom. Now he works for Fox News as a TV personality. Former President Donald Trump said people should vote for Hilton. However, Trump is not popular in California, which might hurt Hilton's chances.
The underdog stayed in the fight.
