Woman Who Grabbed Teen Hockey Referee Will Have Clean Record
Mother accused of assault at youth hockey game completes special program for first-time offenders.
A woman accused of grabbing a teenage hockey referee will soon have her criminal record erased. Andrea Bucci got into trouble last summer at a youth hockey game in Pennsylvania. She was angry about a call the 16-year-old referee made against her son. Police said she grabbed the young referee's shirt during the argument.
The incident happened at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in July. Bucci's son had been kicked out of the game for making a dangerous hit on another player. The referee was just doing his job when he made the call. But Bucci became very upset and confronted the teenager on the ice.
Bucci will not go to jail for what she did. Instead, she is completing a special program called Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition. This program is designed for people who break the law for the first time. She had to do community service, go to counseling, and stay on probation for a period of time.
Her lawyer, Phil DiLucente, says Bucci never meant to hurt anyone. He told reporters that hockey can make fans very emotional. DiLucente believes the punishment fits what actually happened that day. He thinks any parent might react the same way if they thought their child was being treated unfairly.
Now that Bucci has completed the special program, her record will be wiped clean. This means the incident will not show up on background checks in the future. However, she is banned from returning to that specific ice rink in Ohio Township. She chose not to speak directly with reporters about what happened that day.
We all know hockey is a tough sport, and its fans can be too.
