Power Bills Are Getting Cheaper Despite Global Wars
New battery technology and renewable energy are helping lower electricity costs for Australian families.
Power bills have been very expensive for Australian families in recent years. Over the last five years, electricity costs have gone up by about 40 percent or $600 for a typical household. Much of this increase happened after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. That war caused energy prices to rise all over the world because many countries depend on Russian gas and oil.
The Australian government tried to help families during this difficult time. They gave people rebates on their power bills and spent almost $7 billion helping households pay for electricity. Some states also gave extra help. For example, Queensland gave every household $1,000 off their power bills one year.
Now there is another war happening in Iran, but it is not affecting Australia's power prices as much. One reason is that gas prices in Australia have stayed low this time. The government has threatened to make gas companies save 20 percent of their gas for Australian customers instead of selling it all overseas. This threat is helping keep local gas prices down.
The best news is that power bills are actually going to get cheaper. The Australian Energy Regulator announced that electricity prices will drop in most states. In southeast Queensland, rates will fall by up to 10.7 percent. In New South Wales, they will go down by up to 5 percent. Small businesses will save even more money than households.
Four years ago, there basically weren't any big batteries in Australia's major grids.
