Trump Wants Nuclear Companies to Use Old Weapons Material

May 30, 2026 · France 24

The president plans to give dangerous plutonium from Cold War weapons to private companies to make electricity.

President Trump has announced a plan to give plutonium from old nuclear weapons to private companies. This plutonium was made during the Cold War when America built thousands of nuclear bombs. The government no longer needs this material for weapons, so it wants companies to use it for making electricity. Five nuclear startup companies have been chosen to possibly receive some of this dangerous material.

The United States has about 99 tons of plutonium stored in very secure facilities around the country. This amount could be used to make dozens of new nuclear weapons if it fell into the wrong hands. The companies would need to prove they can safely handle and transport this extremely dangerous material. Nuclear safety experts from around the world are very worried about this plan.

Plutonium is one of the most dangerous substances on Earth, much more toxic than uranium. Even breathing in a tiny particle can cause serious lung cancer and other deadly diseases. The material requires special equipment and trained workers to handle it safely. Moving it from secure government buildings to private companies creates many new risks that did not exist before.

Plutonium is one of the most toxic substances ever created, far more so than uranium.
