Why Does Fernando Mendoza Talk Like That? For Indiana's Star QB, It's All Part of the Plan

August 20, 2026 · The New York Times

Indiana's quarterback Fernando Mendoza wins fans with his thoughtful, polished way of speaking — and it's completely natural.

Fernando Mendoza is the quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers, and he just helped his team win a national championship. But people are talking about more than his arm. After every game, Mendoza gives interviews that sound more like a coach or a president than a college football player. His calm, smart, and confident way of speaking has made him famous both on and off the field.

Right after Indiana beat Ohio State for the Big Ten title, Mendoza told a reporter on live TV, 'The Hoosiers are flippin' champs!' He then thanked every group on the team and called them 'process-oriented.' Those are not words most people expect from a 20-something athlete celebrating a huge win. But for Mendoza, it was totally normal.

Mendoza first got famous online when he played for Cal. After a long touchdown drive to beat Stanford, he said, 'I'll remember going 98 yards with my boys.' That line ended up on T-shirts. People loved how genuine he sounded — near tears, proud, and real. It is almost impossible to get a bad quote out of him.

His Indiana head coach, Curt Cignetti, is known for being serious and rarely smiling. Mendoza is the opposite — he is almost always smiling and easy to be around. 'He's incredible,' Cignetti said. 'I take notes.' Together, the two make a good team, balancing each other out as leaders.

So where does Mendoza's speaking style come from? His family played a big role. His brother Alberto, who is also a quarterback at Indiana, says their parents taught them how to speak to people and carry themselves with respect. 'It's greatly due to our parents,' Alberto said. 'They taught us how to speak to people, how to carry ourselves, how to act in a professional manner.'

Mendoza also worked hard to improve his speaking on his own. He took public speaking classes in high school and at Cal. He also watched YouTube videos about how to communicate better. Long before he was a Heisman Trophy winner or a top NFL Draft pick, he wanted to represent himself well in life after football.

People who know Mendoza say his style is 100 percent real — not practiced or fake. His roommate, Indiana receiver Charlie Becker, said Mendoza will say things like 'gosh darn it' when he loses at video games, because he never cusses, even in private. Mendoza even called Becker 'such a young man' during an on-field TV interview after the Ohio State win.

At national championship media day, Mendoza spent almost an hour answering every question from reporters — good ones and awkward ones — without wasting a single answer. Greg Campbell, Indiana's assistant athletic director for communication, said Mendoza wants to make a real connection with everyone he talks to. 'He wants people to feel like, when you ask him a question, he's answering your question and not answering it for anybody else,' Campbell said.

Mendoza knows people joke that he sounds like an AI chatbot. He laughs it off and promises he is a real person who does normal things. What he wants young people to take away is simple: how you speak matters. 'That's something I would recommend to anybody, especially any young sports athlete,' Mendoza said. 'The way that you represent yourself… it's so important on your journey.' Now, as he prepares to play for the Las Vegas Raiders as the No. 1 NFL Draft pick, the world will be listening to every word.

"Such an important part is communication. That's how you really get yourself across the line."
