What the USS Abraham Lincoln's Visit to Thailand Means for the Local Economy

A massive U.S. Navy aircraft carrier called the USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived near the city of Pattaya, Thailand. The ship carried about 5,000 sailors and Marines who had been at sea for a very long time. Now, they are getting a chance to go ashore and explore the city. Local businesses are excited because thousands of visitors could bring a lot of money to the area.

The USS Abraham Lincoln spent 286 days at sea, including 250 days without stopping at any port. It anchored near Pattaya, a city about 100 kilometers south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. The U.S. Navy called the stop a 'liberty port call,' meaning sailors are free to spend time on land and relax. A top Navy officer said the stop gives sailors a 'well-deserved opportunity to rest and recharge.'

The trip was not easy for the crew. Reports said the ship had supply shortages and plumbing problems during the long voyage. There were also worries about the mental health of some sailors, though the Navy denied some of those claims. Despite these challenges, both American and Thai officials called the visit an important sign of friendship between the two countries.

Pattaya has a long history with the U.S. military, going back to the Vietnam War era of the 1960s. At that time, tens of thousands of American troops were based in Thailand. Because Pattaya was near a naval base and an airfield, it became a favorite spot for service members to relax. Today, it is a busy tourist city known for its beaches, hotels, and restaurants.

Local business owners are eager to welcome the sailors. Sutharat Wangdee, who runs a travel company called PattayaCentral.com, said the visit would help hotels, restaurants, shops, and tour companies all across the city. She added that U.S. service members have always been polite and respectful in her experience. The Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya agreed, saying the sailors' spending benefits many different businesses throughout the city.

City officials have estimated that each sailor could spend between $30 and $90 while in Pattaya. If all 5,000 sailors go ashore, total spending could reach around $450,000 or even as high as $3 million according to some local reports. To keep everyone safe, Pattaya increased police patrols and sent 600 officials to manage traffic and crowds. Some streets were also blocked off for Navy personnel to make sure the visit goes smoothly.
