Chicago Bears May Move to New Stadium
The NFL team is deciding between three locations for a new home field.
The Chicago Bears are one of the oldest teams in the NFL. They started playing in Chicago in 1921 at Wrigley Field. The team moved to Soldier Field in 1971 and has played there for over 50 years. Soldier Field is located right on Lake Michigan and is known for its beautiful views.
Before moving to Soldier Field, the Bears had to leave Wrigley Field for an important reason. The NFL required all stadiums to seat at least 50,000 people after merging with another football league. Wrigley Field was too small for this new rule. The Bears played their last game at Wrigley on December 13, 1970, beating the Green Bay Packers.
Today's NFL stadiums are much more advanced than Soldier Field. Many new stadiums have domes to protect fans from bad weather. They also have better technology, more comfortable seats, and easier parking. SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles is an example of what modern NFL stadiums look like.
The decision about where to build will affect many people. Construction workers would get thousands of new jobs during the building process. Local businesses near the new stadium would benefit from game day crowds. However, taxpayers might have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to support the project.
Governor J.B. Pritzker of Illinois has concerns about using tax money for the stadium. He said the state has other important priorities that might be more important than helping the Bears. Many taxpayers agree that schools, roads, and other services should come first. The debate over public money for sports stadiums happens in cities across America.
I've been to multiple stadiums in the NFL and Soldier Field does not compete with any of them.
