Many Christian Leaders Believe in Climate Change But Don't Talk About It

June 10, 2026 · Deutsche Welle

A new study shows most pastors worry about the environment but only half discuss it with their churches.

Most Christian pastors in the United States believe that people are causing climate change. However, only half of them talk about it with their church members. A 2025 study found that almost 90% of Christian leaders think humans are changing the climate. But many don't feel comfortable discussing this topic during church services.

The White House has been removing many rules that protect the environment. At the same time, some Christian leaders are asking their church members to take better care of the Earth. They say the Bible tells people to be good caretakers of the land. This creates an interesting situation where science and faith come together.

Styliano Syropoulos is a researcher who helped with the study. He works at the University of Arizona's school of sustainability. He says pastors have many reasons for not talking about climate change. Some don't feel they know enough about the topic to teach others about it.

Reverend Mattson leads the Hope Episcopal Church in Pennsylvania. He thinks pastors should talk about climate change because people have different opinions about it. He believes some political groups try to make people think humans don't affect the climate. These groups want people to think there's nothing we can do to help save the planet.

Some people believe in what Mattson calls 'Second Coming capitalism.' This means they think God will eventually destroy the Earth and make it completely new again. So they believe people can use up all the Earth's resources without worrying about the future. Mattson says this idea comes from misunderstanding what the Bible actually teaches about caring for the Earth.

I think certain groups of people use power for unbridled consumption, and there's just no Jesus in that.
