British Politician Wants More Smart Workers From Other Countries

June 14, 2026 · The Guardian

Wes Streeting says Britain should welcome scientists and engineers who might not be wanted in America.

Wes Streeting is a politician who wants to become Britain's next leader. He has new ideas about bringing smart workers to Britain from other countries. Streeting thinks President Trump in America is not being nice to scientists and computer experts. He wants Britain to welcome these smart people instead.

Streeting's plan would bring 20,000 top scientists and engineers to Britain in three years. The British government would spend 250 million pounds on this program. He thinks these smart workers would help Britain become better at science and technology. Many of these workers might be looking for new countries to live in because of changes in America.

The politician also wants to use money from underwater oil fields near Britain. There are two oil fields called Jackdaw and Rosebank under the ocean. Companies want to get oil from these places, but many people are arguing about it. Some think it would hurt the environment, while others think it would help Britain's economy.

If Britain uses these oil fields, Streeting wants the tax money to help regular families. The money could help people pay less for electricity and heating. It could also pay for better insulation in houses and cleaner heating systems. This would help families save money and be better for the environment at the same time.

Trump is saying to world-leading scientists, engineers, AI experts - you're not welcome here.
