Canada Plans Its Own AI Future Without Relying on the United States

June 4, 2026 · The New York Times

The country wants to build its own artificial intelligence technology and protect people from AI dangers.

Canada announced a big new plan on Thursday to become a leader in artificial intelligence technology. The country wants to build its own AI systems instead of depending on other nations like the United States. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will spend millions of dollars on AI research and create new laws to protect people. The plan also includes building a powerful government computer and offering free AI classes to citizens.

Canada has always been important in AI research and is home to some of the smartest AI scientists in the world. But now the country wants to work more closely with nations like Australia, France, and Germany instead of just following what the United States does. This change comes as Canada and the US have had some disagreements about trade and politics. The Prime Minister made it clear that Canada still wants to work with American companies when it makes sense.

One major concern came after a terrible shooting at a school in British Columbia in February that killed eight people. Before the attack, the shooter had been using an AI chatbot from OpenAI, and his account had been flagged for breaking the company's rules. Even though OpenAI workers talked about telling Canadian police about this, they never did. The company has since apologized and changed how they handle these situations.

The Canadian government plans to create new laws to protect children's personal information online. They also want to stop companies from using 'deepfakes' and a practice called surveillance pricing. Surveillance pricing happens when companies change the prices you see based on what they know about you personally. These new rules will help keep Canadians safer when using AI technology.

Canada has set a big goal of creating 250,000 new AI jobs in the next five years. However, this might be hard to achieve because of a problem called 'brain drain.' This happens when smart people who are trained in Canada leave to work in other countries, usually the United States, where they can earn more money and pay less taxes. The government will need to find ways to convince these talented workers to stay in Canada.

Prosperity and sovereignty in the age of A.I. belong to nations that can build, adopt and govern A.I. on their own terms.
