Wales Start Nations Championship with Six-Try Win Over Fiji
Wales scored six tries to defeat Fiji 39–24 in the first-ever rugby match played at Cardiff City Stadium.
Wales played a strong game of rugby on Saturday, July 4, beating Fiji 39–24 in Cardiff, Wales. The match was the first game in the new Nations Championship for both teams. It was also the first-ever rugby international played at Cardiff City Stadium. Wales earned a bonus point for their big win, which was only their fourth victory in their last 29 international matches.
Wales scored two first-half tries through flanker Jac Morgan, both from powerful pushover moves. The teams were tied 10–10 at halftime, but Wales came out strong after the break. They added four more tries in the second half to pull away from Fiji and take a commanding lead.
Prop Rhys Carre crashed over the try line early in the second half. Just a minute later, winger Josh Adams snuck in behind a Fiji player who was waiting for the ball to roll out of play. Adams got a touch just in time to score, showing quick thinking and smart play. Those back-to-back tries gave Wales a 12-point lead.
Fiji tried to fight back and had some exciting moments. Loose forward Elia Canakaivata scored from a lineout maul, and winger Selestino Ravutamada ran down the right wing to dot down under the posts. Fiji's flyhalf Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula converted all three of their tries and added a penalty to keep his team in the game for a while.
However, Fiji made too many mistakes and gave Wales easy opportunities to score. Replacement hooker Ryan Elias finished off another lineout maul try. In the final minute, centre Eddie James sprinted over to cap off the win for Wales. Four of the six Welsh tries came from lineout mauls, showing how well they used that part of their game.
Wales also had to deal with a tough moment for Fiji. Star centre Semi Radradra, who had just returned from 18 months away from the sport, was hurt early in the match and had to leave with his leg in a splint. His injury was a big blow for Fiji, who had been hoping he would help power their attack. Despite the loss, Fiji showed flashes of their exciting, fast-paced style of play throughout the game.
Dan Edwards kicked a penalty and a conversion for Wales, while substitute Sam Costelow added two more conversions. Fiji had started well, scoring first after just two minutes through loose forward Pita Gus Sowakula. Fullback Salesi Rayasi made a run from deep and passed to Sowakula, who scored in a fast, flowing move. That early score showed just how dangerous Fiji can be when they play their attacking game.
