Woman Attacked on New York Subway in Hate Crime

The victim said the attack was very scary. The woman choked her twice and kicked her. She also pulled out some of her hair. The victim said this happened only because she was Jewish. She told reporters that it would not have happened if she belonged to a different religion.

Police arrested Diana Smith for the attack. She is 23 years old. Smith is now facing several serious charges. These include hate crime charges and harassment charges. Hate crimes are attacks that happen because of someone's race, religion, or other personal traits.

The victim said she was upset that other people on the train did not help much. Only two people tried to step in during the attack. She was beaten to the ground while others watched. The victim believes people should work together as a community to help each other.

New data from police shows that hate crimes in New York City are going up. They have increased by about 9% compared to last year. However, other violent crimes like murders and shootings have gone down. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared this information on Wednesday.

A Jewish organization has been tracking antisemitic attacks in the city. Antisemitism means hatred toward Jewish people. Lisa Katz works for Combat Antisemitism Movement. She said there have been 193 incidents of antisemitism in New York City this year through May 31st. That means more than one antisemitic incident happens every day in the city.
