US to Spend Billions Powering Army Bases with Mini Nuclear Reactors

The reactors being built are called micro reactors. They are much smaller than the large nuclear plants most people know about. A typical large nuclear plant can produce about 1 gigawatt of power. Micro reactors produce less than 20 megawatts, which is enough to power a military base or a campus.
The project is part of a bigger push by the Trump administration to bring back the US nuclear industry. The White House wants to quadruple, or multiply by four, the country's reactor capacity by the year 2050. In April, the Air Force also announced plans to add reactors at three of its sites. These moves show how serious the government is about nuclear energy.
Military leaders say the reactors are needed because enemies could try to attack the power grid. Lucian Niemeyer, a former defense official, explained that bases need their own power source so they are not easy targets. 'There are cyber threats facing our grid, there are drone threats,' he said. Having their own reactors means bases can keep working even if outside power is knocked out.
However, the programme faces real challenges. Army official Jeff Waksman admitted that none of the companies have a finished micro reactor design yet. He said it is likely that one or more of the companies could fail to complete their projects. 'We know that this is going to be very difficult,' he said honestly.
The five companies chosen for the project have very different backgrounds. Westinghouse and General Atomics are well-known names in nuclear energy and defense, but both are working on brand-new designs they have never built before. BWXT has experience building reactors for Navy ships, but its army design is larger than anything it has made before. Antares and Radiant are startups, meaning they are new companies that have not yet delivered a finished product to any customer.
Officials believe that even with the risks, the programme will be worth it. Getting reactors working at army bases will help companies learn how to build and get approval for bigger civilian nuclear plants later on. Waksman called this effort the 'spear tip' for all advanced reactors in the United States. In other words, success here could open the door to a whole new era of nuclear energy in America.
