US Will Speed Up AI Use for National Security

June 6, 2026 · Reuters

President Trump says the country will use artificial intelligence to help keep America safe while following the law.

The White House announced on Friday that America will speed up how it develops and uses artificial intelligence for national security. The government wants to use AI to help protect the country. However, officials stressed that this technology should not be used to spy on people illegally. This decision comes as leaders worry about powerful new AI systems and how they might be used.

President Trump signed a special government order about using AI for security purposes. He said America can use this technology responsibly while staying true to American values. The president wants the country to use AI in areas like gathering information and military operations. This plan aims to help keep the nation safe while following proper rules.

The Trump administration also announced earlier this week that it would ask top AI companies to test their best computer programs with the government first. These companies would need to let security experts check their AI systems before releasing them to the public. This testing would help make sure the AI programs are safe and secure. Government officials are concerned about how powerful these new AI systems have become.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has 90 days to update rules about weapons that can work by themselves. These rules need to make sure that AI systems still follow the chain of command in the military. Trump wants to make sure that even smart weapons still have human leaders making the final decisions. The new rules must keep up with the latest AI technology while keeping control with people.

The new rules come after a disagreement between an AI company called Anthropic and the Pentagon. Anthropic makes an AI system called Claude, but the company refused to let it be used for weapons that work by themselves or for mass surveillance. The Pentagon wanted to be able to use the technology as long as it followed US laws. This disagreement shows how tricky it can be to balance AI development with security needs.

Under my Administration, the United States can and will responsibly accelerate the use of AI across intelligence and warfighting domains in line with American values.
