Carrick Gets a Reality Check as Hull Stuns Manchester United

August 22, 2026 · Reuters

Promoted Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 on opening day, handing new manager Michael Carrick his first big test of the season.

Manchester United traveled to Hull, England, on Saturday full of hope for the new season. But things did not go as planned. Hull City, a team that had just been promoted back to the Premier League, beat United 2-0 in a shocking result. The loss left United manager Michael Carrick with a lot of tough questions to face after just one game.

Carrick had taken over as United's manager back in January, replacing Ruben Amorim. Since then, he had turned the team around in a big way. United went from sitting in the middle of the table to finishing third by the end of last season. They earned 39 points in just 17 games under Carrick — more than any other team in that same stretch.

The club also brought in new players over the summer. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos joined the squad, and Brighton's Carlos Baleba was expected to arrive soon. Many fans and experts believed United was finally ready to compete for the title again after going 13 years without one. Saturday's loss to Hull felt like a cold splash of water on all that excitement.

Hull fans were already in a festive mood before the game even started. Orange smoke filled the air above the MKM Stadium, and fans waved black-and-orange scarves to celebrate the Tigers' return to the top division after nine years away. They had every reason to cheer — their team had not played in the Premier League since 2017. The atmosphere was electric and full of energy.

Hull played with more speed and power than United right from the start. They scored twice before halftime, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy both finding the net from set-pieces — meaning corners or free kicks. United's defense broke down badly on both goals. By the break, Hull led 2-0 and were firmly in control of the match.

United had 72 percent of the ball during the game, but they rarely used it in a dangerous way. Even center back Harry Maguire was one of their best attacking threats, which showed how little United's forwards were doing. Bryan Mbeumo forced Hull's goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis into one good save, but for most of the game the keeper had almost nothing to do. United had the ball but could not do much with it.

One of the big story lines of the day was Marcus Rashford's return to the team. Rashford had not played for United since December 2024. He had been left out by former manager Amorim and spent time on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona. When he came on against Hull, fans were hoping he could spark a comeback. He showed some sharp moments, but he did not receive enough passes or support from his teammates to make a real difference.

After the game, Carrick spoke to reporters and kept a calm tone. He admitted the team had things to fix but said one loss would not change the direction of the club. 'It is one game. First game of the season. It is disappointing enough, it hurts, of course it does,' he said. He added that the team would stay focused and work hard in training ahead of next week's match.

Hull fans made the day even more memorable with their chants and celebrations. They taunted United's traveling supporters by singing, 'You're getting mauled by the Tigers.' To make matters worse for United fans, an announcement was made that two trains back to Manchester had been canceled. Hull fans quickly joked, 'You're going home in a taxi.' It was a fun moment for the home crowd, and a painful one for United supporters.

For Hull, the win was especially meaningful because it was their first league victory over Manchester United in 52 years. For Carrick, it was a reminder that nothing in football is ever guaranteed. Building momentum is hard, and it can disappear quickly. But Carrick insisted his team would bounce back and continue moving in the right direction.

"It won't knock us."
