Ukrainians Protest Zelensky's Firing of Popular Defense Minister

July 16, 2026 · The Boston Globe

Thousands marched in Ukrainian cities after President Zelensky removed Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a tech-savvy leader credited with boosting Ukraine's military with drones.

Thousands of people marched in cities across Ukraine on Thursday to protest President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision to fire his defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov was just 35 years old and had been in the job for only six months. He was known for using new technology, especially drones, to help Ukraine fight Russia's much larger army. Many Ukrainians felt he was making real progress, so they were angry and confused about why he was let go.

Zelensky said he removed Fedorov because Fedorov and General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the top military commander, could not work together. 'I'm just showing that if the sides can't resolve an issue, I will have to resolve it,' Zelensky said at a news conference. Zelensky also replaced his prime minister at the same time, making this one of his biggest government shake-ups since the war began. The changes came at a tense moment, as Ukraine had recently been making gains against Russian forces on the battlefield.

Fedorov had pushed hard to modernize Ukraine's military during his short time as defense minister. He helped Ukraine gain better access to Starlink satellites, which gave soldiers important communications advantages. He also worked to bring in more drones, new missile defense systems, and fairer ways of buying weapons. Fedorov said he wanted to fight corruption in the ministry, which was a problem that many Ukrainians cared deeply about.

At a news conference, Fedorov wore a dark T-shirt and jeans and spoke honestly about the challenges he faced. He said General Syrskyi blocked many of the changes he tried to make. 'Under this arrangement, I personally do not know how the war can be won,' he said. He also posted on social media about his achievements, including improved drone technology and long-range strike capabilities.

General Syrskyi, who is 60, did not appear in public but thanked Fedorov in a Facebook post and said he hoped Fedorov would keep serving Ukraine. Syrskyi is a veteran military leader who helped defend Kyiv early in the 2022 invasion and led a successful counterattack in the Kharkiv region. However, many younger Ukrainians see him as too old-fashioned for modern warfare. Fedorov's supporters feel that Syrskyi has been slowing down the kind of reforms Ukraine needs to win.

The protesters were mostly young people who chanted 'Syrskyi, go away!' and 'A European army for a European country!' A Kyiv resident named Bohdan Huryak told the Associated Press he was 'deeply outraged' by the firing. He said Fedorov showed real results on the battlefield and gave people hope and confidence in victory. 'And then, six months later, he is removed from office? Come on,' Huryak said.

The dismissal also caused at least one military resignation. Colonel Pavlo Yelizarov, a deputy commander of Ukraine's air force, quit in protest and said firing Fedorov was 'a great evil for the country's defense capability.' He warned that Ukraine's air defenses would weaken as a result, leading to more deaths. His resignation showed how deeply the decision upset people inside the military as well as on the streets.

While Ukraine dealt with this political crisis, Russia kept up its attacks. Two people were killed and five others were wounded, including a child, when Russian missiles hit Kyiv overnight, according to Ukraine's Emergency Service. Zelensky named Major General Yevhen Khmara to handle the defense minister's duties in the meantime. Khmara had previously led the SBU, Ukraine's state security service, and commanded an elite special forces unit.

Zelensky acknowledged that the tensions between his Defense Ministry and the military went beyond just two people clashing. Standing beside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he said, 'Together we win, and together we're responsible for the things that cause confusion and public reaction.' He made clear that both sides shared blame for the public uproar. The moment highlighted how difficult it is to manage a government while fighting a long, costly war.

Before his time as defense minister, Fedorov had led Ukraine's efforts to modernize its government using digital technology and became a popular figure for creating easy-to-use online services. His removal has left many Ukrainians — especially younger ones — worried about the country's future direction in the war against Russia. Russia's pro-Kremlin supporters celebrated the news online, calling it a sign of division in Ukraine's leadership. Ukraine's fight against Russia continues, and the outcome of this political shake-up remains to be seen.

"I'm not deeply invested in the internal political debates, but this is a person who shows results on the battlefield, we see results, we feel the fighting spirit and confidence in victory rising."
