UK's Burnham Visits Ukraine With Plan to Help Build Long-Range Missiles

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham traveled to Ukraine on Monday for his first overseas trip since taking office. He announced that Britain would help Ukraine produce more long-range missiles within its own borders. The visit showed that the UK continues to be one of Ukraine's strongest supporters during the ongoing war with Russia.

Burnham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and co-chaired a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing. This is a group of countries working together to back Ukraine in the conflict. The meeting gave allies a chance to discuss new ways to strengthen Ukraine's defenses.

A major announcement involved a powerful missile system called the SCALP. Britain agreed to let a company called MBDA share classified, or secret, details about British-made parts inside the missile. This will help France and Ukraine set up local factories to build the missile, since it uses technology from both countries.

Burnham spoke strongly about why Britain is involved. 'Ukraine's security is our security,' he said, promising that Britain would stand by Ukraine 'for as long as it takes.' The UK has supported Ukraine ever since Russia began its full-scale invasion in 2022.

Britain was the first country to promise Western battle tanks and long-range missiles to Ukraine after the invasion started. The UK has now given more than £25 billion, roughly $34 billion, in both military and civilian support. This makes Britain one of the largest contributors to Ukraine's defense effort.

Russia responded angrily to Britain's continued help. Moscow warned London last week of 'consequences' for sending drones to Ukraine. The threat came after reports that British-made drones were used to strike targets deep inside Russia for the very first time.

Ukraine has been increasing its use of drones and long-range strike weapons to hit Russian targets far from the front lines. These targets include oil refineries and supply facilities that Russia depends on. If Ukraine can build its own missiles at home, it will be less dependent on deliveries from other countries.

Burnham's trip came just weeks after Zelenskiy visited Britain in late July. That visit was made shortly after Burnham became prime minister, and Zelenskiy was his first foreign guest. The two leaders are working to build a strong partnership as they respond to the ongoing war.
