Judge Orders Trump to Restore History Exhibits at National Parks

June 13, 2026 · CBS News

Federal court says the administration cannot remove displays about slavery and other difficult parts of American history.

A federal judge has ordered President Trump to put back history exhibits that were removed from national parks across the country. Judge Angel Kelley said the Trump administration was trying to hide important parts of American history. The ruling came after conservation groups sued the government in February. They said park workers were forced to take down displays about slavery and other difficult topics.

In March 2025, President Trump signed an executive order called 'Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.' The order told national parks not to show anything that might make Americans look bad. Trump's team said they wanted to promote American dignity. But Judge Kelley disagreed with this approach.

The judge wrote that the administration was trying to 'rewrite the Nation's history with a white-out pen.' She said the government was telling only half the story by removing certain exhibits. Judge Kelley explained that true history must include all Americans' experiences. This means showing both good and bad parts of the past.

Many changes happened at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. Workers removed exhibits about nine enslaved people who lived there in the 1790s under President George Washington. Other parks also had to make changes. At Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona, workers took down a sign about rock formations because it showed a visitor with a Pride flag.

Conservation groups and historical organizations filed a lawsuit to stop these removals. They argued that national parks should show accurate history and science. The groups said censorship goes against what national parks represent. They wanted visitors to learn the full truth about America's past.

History cannot be faithfully told while excluding the experiences of communities whose contributions, struggles, and achievements form an important part of our Nation's story.
