Trump Media Reports a Huge Loss and Plans a Fresh Start

August 11, 2026 · The Boston Globe

The company behind Truth Social lost $238 million in one quarter and is now dropping most of its new business ideas to focus on social media.

Trump Media & Technology, the company that runs the Truth Social website, reported a loss of $238 million between April and June of this year. That is more than ten times the money it lost during the same three months a year ago. The company had been trying to grow by entering new businesses, like online betting and cryptocurrency. Those efforts did not go well, and now its new leader says the company will refocus on social media.

The company's new chief executive, Kevin McGurn, spoke on a call after the earnings report came out. He said that the push into new industries would mostly be stopped. Instead, he wants the company to focus on Truth Social and its mission of giving users a place to share their views. 'We made the disciplined choice to pivot in order to invest more time and resources in our most important initiatives,' McGurn said.

A big part of McGurn's plan is a service called Truth API. This service gives Wall Street trading companies early access to posts made by top users on Truth Social. President Donald Trump is the platform's most-followed user, and his posts often cause big moves in financial markets. Trading firms are willing to pay between $60,000 and $100,000 a month for that fast access.

Trump Media has already signed up ten customers for the Truth API service. Most of them are high-frequency trading firms, which buy and sell stocks in fractions of a second. If all ten keep paying, the service could bring in between $7 million and $12 million each year. That would be roughly two to three times more than everything the company earned last year.

Some people have raised concerns about the Truth API service. Government watchdog groups say it could let President Trump profit from being in office. Democrats in Congress have promised to investigate if they win more seats in the midterm elections. McGurn says selling fast data access is a normal practice in the tech and finance industries.

Not every new idea is being cancelled. McGurn said the company will keep working on a nuclear fusion energy project. Trump Media had already announced a plan to join with an energy company called TAE Technologies, and McGurn hopes to finish that deal before the end of this year. He called the fusion project 'the single most important driver of long-term value for this company.'

Much of the huge loss last quarter came from falling values of Bitcoin and a crypto token called Cronos that the company owns. These are called paper losses because the company has not actually sold those assets yet. Even without those paper losses, the company's operating loss grew from $44 million to $164 million compared to last year. That still shows the business is struggling to make money.

Despite the losses, Trump Media still has a solid amount of cash on hand. At the end of June, the company had more than $400 million in cash and short-term investments. It also held $1.2 billion in Bitcoin and related assets. The company carries $1 billion in debt, but that does not come due until 2028, giving the company some time to turn things around.

We made the disciplined choice to pivot in order to invest more time and resources in our most important initiatives.
