Washington DC Prepares for Important Elections
City residents will choose new leaders while dealing with changes from President Trump's policies.
Washington DC is getting ready for important elections this month. The city's residents will choose a new mayor and a new delegate to Congress. This hasn't happened at the same time since 1992. President Trump's policies are making these elections very different from past ones.
Washington DC is not like other cities in America. Congress controls many things that happen in the city. The city can elect its own leaders, but Congress still has to approve the city's budget and laws. This makes it hard for local leaders to make all the decisions they want to make.
Since President Trump returned to office last year, many things have changed in DC. The National Guard soldiers are now working in the city to help fight crime. Trump has also made cuts to federal jobs, which hurts the city's economy. Many people in DC work for the federal government, so these job cuts affect lots of families.
The current mayor, Muriel Bowser, has had to work with Trump's administration. In 2020, she named a street 'Black Lives Matter Plaza' near the White House. But earlier this year, she agreed to remove it because Republican lawmakers pressured her to do so. This shows how hard it is for DC leaders to balance what their citizens want with what Congress demands.
Two city council members are running to be the next mayor. Janeese Lewis George and Kenyan McDuffie are the top candidates. George says her main goal is to help with the cost of living in DC. She thinks Trump's policies have made it harder for people to afford living in the city. McDuffie focuses on public safety and wants to hire 1,000 more police officers over four years.
The city also needs a new delegate to Congress. Eleanor Holmes Norton has served in this job for 18 terms, but she decided not to run again. She is 88 years old and has been an important civil rights leader. The delegate cannot vote in Congress, but they can speak on the House floor and introduce bills for the 700,000 people who live in DC.
Two council members are also running for this job. Robert White Jr. and Brooke Pinto are the main candidates. Both want to give DC more control over its own affairs. Pinto says self-governance has 'never been a true reality for the people of DC.' She also wants to help middle-class and working families afford to live in the city.
Many voters are worried about how Trump's policies affect their daily lives. About 3,500 National Guard troops are currently in the city. Officials say this number will grow to 5,000 as the country prepares for its 250th birthday celebrations. Some people think this military presence makes the city safer, while others think it goes too far.
The elections will happen on June 16. Since most people in DC vote for Democrats, whoever wins these primary elections will likely win in November. The new leaders will have to deal with a Republican president and Congress while trying to represent what DC residents want. This will be a big challenge for whoever gets elected.
It's going to be a big sea change in city politics, no matter how the elections shake out.
