Trump Administration Plans to Spend $5 Billion on AI for Science

The Trump administration announced on Wednesday that it will spend $5 billion to use artificial intelligence to solve some of science's toughest problems. Fifteen federal agencies will take part in the project. The money will help scientists find the root causes of long-term diseases, discover new medicines faster, and build stronger materials. Officials say AI tools and powerful government computers will make this possible.

Michael Kratsios, the chief technology adviser to President Donald Trump, explained the plan in an interview. He said scientists will be able to use the Department of Energy's supercomputers, special AI programs, and large collections of data. These tools will help researchers run experiments using computer algorithms. Algorithms are step-by-step instructions that computers follow to solve problems or find patterns.

The agencies taking part include the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, Defense, and Interior. The White House said it wants all these groups working together on one big goal. 'The White House is helping bring together all of the different agencies that work on different domains to make them part of this larger effort on AI for science,' Kratsios said. Having so many agencies involved means the project can cover many different areas of science at once.

The U.S. government holds some of the largest collections of data in the world. These include records about chemicals, important minerals, and patients' health. AI models can study this data to find patterns and make predictions. Kratsios said the $5 billion plan is a chance to train AI on that information and use it to answer important scientific questions.

The Trump administration also wants to change how the government pays for scientific research. Right now, much of the money goes to universities. The new plan would send more money directly to individual scientists and AI projects instead. A White House report says this would give the government more say over how research dollars are used.

The report stated, 'Federal support for science must be politically accountable.' This means the administration wants to make sure research funded by taxpayers lines up with its priorities. However, federal courts have pushed back on some of Trump's earlier efforts to cut research funding. In January, a court ruled that the administration could not cut grant money from the National Institutes of Health to universities doing scientific and medical research.

Technology company Microsoft also announced it will support the project. Microsoft will donate $40 million in AI computing credits over three years. Computing credits let researchers use powerful computer systems without paying for them directly. This donation will help scientists get access to the technology they need to do their work.
