Troy Melton tried so hard to slow things down. Now his rise is coming at warp speed

August 21, 2026 · The New York Times

The Detroit Tigers' young pitcher was once just a catcher in high school — now he's one of baseball's most exciting new starters.

Troy Melton is one of the hottest young pitchers in Major League Baseball. He plays for the Detroit Tigers, and through his first 17 starts, he had a 1.79 ERA. That is one of the best marks ever for a pitcher that new to the big leagues. But not long ago, nobody thought of Melton as a pitcher at all.

Melton grew up in Anaheim, California, and played at Canyon High School. A scouting service once ranked him as the 32nd-best catcher in the state of California. He had no plans to pitch in college. Then, the summer before his senior year, a coach invited him to a pitching showcase at Long Beach State. That one day ended up changing his whole life.

At the showcase, Melton spent most of his time crouching behind the plate, catching for other pitchers. Near the end of the day, a coach told him to grab a ball and throw. Melton was tall and thin, which made him look more like a pitcher than a catcher. He had a smooth delivery and a quick arm. San Diego State pitching coach Sam Peraza was watching, and he liked what he saw.

Melton threw 88 miles per hour that day and had little experience with off-speed pitches. But Peraza saw something worth developing. He invited Melton to visit SDSU's campus, and Melton fell in love with the school right away. The coaches told him he would have to walk on without a scholarship. Even so, Melton chose SDSU because he believed something bigger might be waiting for him.

His early college years were not easy. He hurt his lat muscle as a freshman and only pitched in four games. A virus called COVID-19 cut his sophomore season short, so he threw only 22 innings. His third year was the hardest — he had a 6.14 ERA even though his fastball had jumped to 97 mph. Something was clearly missing, and Melton couldn't figure out what it was.

After Melton's third season, Peraza took a new job and SDSU hired a new pitching coach named Shaun Cole. Before Cole coached a single day, he called each of his new pitchers. When he got Melton on the phone, he stopped mid-conversation and asked, 'Do you always talk this fast?' Melton was shocked. He had no idea he was speaking so quickly.

Cole saw that Melton's brain was always racing. Melton was a strong student who loved chess and was passionate about baseball. But all that energy was actually hurting him on the mound. Cole gave Melton books about mental toughness and taught him to slow down his thinking. He also shared a phrase from the Navy SEALs: 'Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.'

The idea behind that saying is simple: when you stay in control and slow down, things actually work out better. Cole explained that if Navy SEALs can stay calm in dangerous situations, baseball players can do the same. Melton started finding a focal point in the stadium before each inning, taking a deep breath, and repeating that motto. The mental changes made a big difference on the field.

In his final college season, Melton posted a 2.07 ERA. The Detroit Tigers picked him in the fourth round of the draft. Once inside the Tigers' system, he got access to high-tech tools like radar systems and motion-capture cameras. Coaches used that data to help him improve every pitch. In spring 2025, a coach named Dylan Axelrod helped Melton retool his cutter pitch, turning it into one of the best in the game.

Today, Melton is a key part of the Tigers' pitching rotation. His cutter now hits 95 mph with sharp movement, and he has four pitches that grade out as above average or better. Before every inning, he finds something shaped like a zero in the stadium, takes a breath, and repeats his motto. The kid who was once the 32nd-best catcher in California has become one of the most exciting pitchers in all of baseball.

"I've gotten to a point where I'm confident, and I trust I can slow the game down."
