Doctors Create First World Guidelines for a Rare Gene Disorder Called Timothy Syndrome
An international team of experts agreed on new names and care rules for people with rare changes in the CACNA1C gene, giving families and doctors a clear path forward.
A group of doctors and scientists from the US, UK, and Europe released the world's first official guidelines for a rare genetic condition called Timothy syndrome. Timothy syndrome is caused by changes in a gene known as CACNA1C. These guidelines explain what to call the condition, how to diagnose it, and how to care for people who have it. More than 200 families helped shape the final rules.
For years, doctors used many different names for people with CACNA1C gene changes, which caused a lot of confusion. The new guidelines create clear, agreed-upon terms for everyone to use. People with Timothy Syndrome Type 1, or TS1, often have heart rhythm problems, webbed fingers or toes, autism, and seizures. A broader group called CACNA1C-Related Disorders, or CRDs, now covers people who have some but not all of these symptoms.
The most effective heart treatment right now is a small device called an ICD, placed inside the chest to correct dangerous heartbeats. Since doctors started using ICDs early in children's lives, many more Timothy syndrome patients are living longer. Low blood sugar, seizures, dental problems, and stomach issues are also common and need careful management. Every patient should have a care plan made just for them, and schools should be ready to support their unique needs.
Implantation of an ICD early in life in TS children decreases mortality risk and this change in practice has led to a dramatic increase in life expectancy of TS children since the syndrome was first described.
