Thousands Show Up for 'Chosen Few' House Music Festival: 'It Connects Us'

July 11, 2026 · Chicago Tribune

Chicago's Jackson Park filled with tens of thousands of fans celebrating 36 years of homegrown house music.

On a hot summer Saturday, tens of thousands of people packed into Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side. They came to dance, eat barbecue, and celebrate house music at the 36th annual Chosen Few DJs Picnic and Music Festival. Organizers expected around 45,000 people to show up, making it one of the largest house music festivals in the world. Colorful tents filled the park, and the smell of grilled food mixed with the beat of music booming from the main stage.

Fans of house music call themselves 'House Heads,' and many have been coming to this event for decades. For them, the festival feels less like a big concert and more like a family reunion. Keesha Lee and Miriam Smith, who are sisters-in-law, have attended together for more than 15 years. They return every year for the music, the people, and the sense of community. 'People I went to high school with, people I went to college with and have never seen again, but they always come here,' Smith said.

Ramona Thomas and William Cook have been close friends since fifth grade at Emerson Elementary School in Harvey, a suburb south of Chicago. Thomas has attended all 36 festivals, and Cook has missed only one. The music is what keeps them coming back. 'We're House Heads,' Thomas said. 'We love house music, so it doesn't even matter what the price is, it doesn't matter the setup. It's nostalgic. It just doesn't change.'

The festival has grown a lot from its early days. Cook remembered when it was a small, free event held behind the Museum of Science and Industry with no vendors, no sponsors, and no ticket prices. To cover the cost of the permit, organizers passed buckets through the crowd for donations. 'Quarters, dimes, dollars — whatever you gave went toward the next year's permit,' Cook recalled.

This year, Chosen Few shares Jackson Park with the newly opened Obama Presidential Center, whose building peeked out from behind the main DJ stage. Cook called it a full-circle moment, remembering when former President Obama sent a video message that played above the stage back in 2015. 'Having the building there is reminiscent of him looking over us and reminding us that, hey, we're not too far from greatness right there,' he said. Attendees agreed the new landmark has not changed the spirit of the festival.

In the end, it is the music that keeps people returning year after year. Lewis Patterson, a lifelong Chicago resident from the Bronzeville neighborhood, summed it up simply. 'It connects us back to our roots,' he said. 'I grew up on it and it's a spiritual connection back to the roots.' For tens of thousands of House Heads, Chosen Few is not just a festival — it is a living piece of Chicago history.

"It connects us back to our roots."
