China Draws a New Map of the Moon — and It's About More Than Science
China's detailed lunar map sets new scientific standards and signals its growing ambitions in deep space exploration.
Chinese scientists have released a new, detailed map of the moon. The map was unveiled on August 6 by the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. It updates an earlier version from 2024 and includes fresh information about the moon's ancient history. Scientists say the map is one of the most complete pictures of the moon's surface ever created.
The new map uses a scale of 1 to 5 million, meaning every unit on the map stands for 5 million of the same units on the real moon. It draws new boundaries for some of the moon's oldest time periods, stretching back as far as 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists also used updated data to show that certain mineral-rich zones on the moon are larger and more connected than once thought. These zones contain materials like potassium, rare-earth elements, and phosphorus.
China's space program has been gathering moon rocks to help build this knowledge. The Chang'e 5 mission launched in 2020 and brought back samples from the near side of the moon. Then in 2024, Chang'e 6 became the first mission ever to collect rocks from the moon's far side — the half that always faces away from Earth. Researchers say these samples give scientists a new way to study a part of the moon that has long been a mystery.
The map also sets a new style for how future space maps will be made. It uses a color system where lighter colors show younger rock and darker colors show older rock. Chinese officials say this design will be used for maps of other planets as China pushes deeper into the solar system. Yang Zhiming, the director of the institute behind the map, said, 'This goes beyond showcasing technological soft power. This standard will be extended to future planetary geologic mapping, establishing an independent intellectual property framework for China's deep space exploration.'
The United States and China are both trying to lead the way in space, and maps are part of that contest. Just like countries on Earth all agree on one system for telling time, someone will need to set the rules for time and maps in space. Right now, the U.S. and China even disagree on what time it is on the moon — clocks there run slightly faster because the moon's gravity is weaker than Earth's. Who gets to set these kinds of standards matters, because it shapes how future missions are planned and how countries work — or compete — in space.
