Wind Power Keeps Growing Despite President Trump's Opposition

May 27, 2026 · Deutsche Welle

The US is building more wind farms than ever, even though the president wants to stop them.

President Trump has been trying to stop wind power projects across the United States since he took office. He has canceled permits, stopped construction, and even paid companies to quit building wind farms. However, the country is still building more wind power than ever before. By 2027, the US will have 35 times more offshore wind power than when Trump first became president.

Trump has never liked wind power and has made false claims about it causing cancer and killing whales. On his first day back in office, he signed an order to stop new wind projects from being built. He also stopped work on five offshore wind farms that were already being constructed. The president says these actions protect national security and help Americans save money on electricity.

Despite Trump's efforts, wind power is winning in court. In December, a judge said Trump's wind ban went too far and struck it down. Other courts have also said the stopped wind farms can start building again. Legal experts say wind power projects usually win when they go to court.

The administration has spent nearly $2 billion paying companies to walk away from wind projects. Trump's Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said this would help lower energy costs for Americans. He claimed people would no longer have to pay for what he called expensive, unreliable wind projects. However, many experts disagree with this view.

Wind power currently makes about 10% of America's electricity. Natural gas makes the most at 40%, followed by nuclear power at 17%. Even without government help, wind and solar power are some of the cheapest ways to make electricity in America. Once a turbine is built, the wind costs nothing, so wind farms can sell wholesale electricity far more cheaply than gas or coal plants.
