Companies Create New Products for New Mothers
Businesses are making vitamins, spa treatments, and retreats just for women who recently had babies.
Companies around the world are creating new products for mothers who just had babies. These include special vitamins, spa treatments, and expensive retreats. The wellness industry is worth over $6 trillion and is now focusing on helping new moms. About 130 million women give birth each year globally, making this a huge market for businesses.
Scientists have learned that becoming a mother changes a woman's brain and body forever. In 2019, researchers found that a new mom's brain changes as much as a teenager's brain does. This big change has a special name called 'matrescence,' but most people don't know this word yet. A scientist named Dana Raphael created this term in the 1970s to describe what happens to women after they have babies.
Many new mothers don't get enough help after having their babies. In the United States, new moms only see a doctor once after birth, usually six weeks later. In other countries like the UK, mothers get a bit more help with home visits from nurses. This leaves many women looking for other ways to feel better and take care of themselves.
Jasmine Hamilton is a nurse who works with new mothers at a hospital in Philadelphia. When she had her first baby in November, she noticed how much her life changed. She said becoming a parent 'completely shifted how I show up for myself, especially when it comes to my health.' Like many new mothers, she wanted more support to help her feel better.
Thousands of mother groups have started on Facebook around the world. Women in these groups ask for help with problems like hair loss and other health issues after having babies. Many of these mothers turn to vitamins because they are easy to buy and use. Dr. Abbe Wain, a doctor in New York City, thinks vitamins can help new mothers get back the nutrients their bodies need.
Some companies are creating expensive retreats and spa treatments for new mothers. These cost thousands of dollars and are held at fancy hotels around the world. Places like Shou Sugi Ban House in New York offer half-day, full-day, or overnight experiences for new moms. The Cheval Blanc Paris hotel has a program called 'Haute Motherhood' that costs about $3,860 and includes massages, facials, and exercise classes.
However, these expensive treatments are only available to wealthy mothers who live near these fancy places. Most new mothers can't afford these costly options or don't have time to go to them. Zoe Weiner, a beauty editor in New York City with a new baby, can only find 'micro-moments' for self-care, like using an LED face mask while feeding her baby at 3 AM.
Not everyone thinks this focus on selling products to new mothers is good. Michelle Kennedy runs a company called Peanut that helps mothers connect with each other. She believes the mothers who need help the most don't need expensive products. Instead, they need community support, information, and people to understand what they're going through.
Kennedy and other advocates want the word 'matrescence' added to dictionaries. They think having the right words to describe what new mothers experience will help society understand and support them better. Right now, most phones and computers think 'matrescence' is spelled wrong because it's not in regular dictionaries yet.
The mothers who are most underserved aren't the ones who need a better product recommendation.
