England vs. Argentina: The World Cup Match Everyone Is Talking About

July 14, 2026 · The Sydney Morning Herald

Two soccer giants with a long and dramatic history are set to face off in a World Cup semi-final that fans around the world cannot wait to watch.

England and Argentina are about to meet in a World Cup semi-final, and soccer fans everywhere cannot wait to watch. These two countries have a long and dramatic history that goes back more than 50 years. Argentina's greatest player, Lionel Messi, has never played against England in his entire 21-year career — until now. England's manager, Thomas Tuchel, is pushing his team to perform at their very best for what many are calling the biggest match of the tournament.

England barely made it through their quarter-final match against Norway, winning 2-1 in extra time. Jude Bellingham, England's star midfielder, scored twice to help his team survive the close contest. After the match, Tuchel was direct and honest, calling his players 'sloppy' and saying they made too many technical mistakes. Still, he was proud of the way his team found a way to win when it mattered most.

When a reporter asked if the narrow win was a 'mentality thing,' Tuchel pushed back strongly. 'Mentality? This is pure mentality. You can bottle it up and sell it,' he said. He believes his players have the mental toughness to compete at the highest level. England have now reached the World Cup semi-finals for the fourth time in their history, a major milestone for the country.

Argentina's journey to the semi-finals has been just as difficult and nerve-wracking. They played to extra time against Cape Verde in a tense match that left Messi in tears. Against Switzerland, Argentina were outplayed for long stretches before their comeback, with Julian Alvarez scoring a stunning extra-time winner. Many soccer experts are still asking whether Argentina are truly dominant or just getting lucky.

England have some injury worries heading into the match. Defensive midfielder Declan Rice and right-back Reece James are both doubtful to play. Bellingham has also been seen grabbing at his shoulder during games after having surgery on it last year. Argentina's media have been sharing videos of those moments, perhaps as a way to try to get under England's skin before kick-off.

The two nations have faced each other 14 times in soccer history, including five World Cup meetings. Even though they don't play each other often, their matches are always dramatic and full of big moments. The most famous clash came at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, when Diego Maradona scored the 'Hand of God' goal, punching the ball into the net with his fist. He also scored the 'Goal of the Century' in the same match, dribbling past almost the whole England team.

At the 1966 World Cup, Argentina's captain Antonio Rattin was sent off but refused to leave the field for nearly 10 minutes. As he walked off, he crumpled England's corner flag and sat on a red carpet meant for Queen Elizabeth II to protest the decision. England won that match 1-0, but Argentina called it 'El Robo del Siglo,' meaning 'Robbery of the Century.' England manager Alf Ramsey angered many people by calling the Argentine players 'animals' after the game.

Messi was not yet born when that 1986 classic was played, but he has seen it many times on video. 'Everything I have seen and remember from that match is from videos and images that Argentinians constantly watch and relive,' Messi said. He also noted that facing England for the first time is something he has looked forward to. 'I've played against everyone except England, so it will be nice for that reason too,' he added.

Argentina have reportedly asked FIFA if they can wear their deep blue away kit, similar to the ones worn during famous past wins over England. Some believe this is a psychological move to try to unsettle the England players. Ticket prices for the semi-final have reportedly doubled compared to the other semi-final, showing how much demand there is for this game. England's pubs are expected to be busier than on New Year's Eve.

Tuchel says he is enjoying every minute of this high-pressure tournament. 'It's intense. I'm enjoying it a lot. I feel very alive in these moments. This is where I want to be. I don't want to be anywhere else in the world,' he said. Whether it is Bellingham's big-game brilliance or Messi's once-in-a-generation magic, all the pieces are in place for a truly unforgettable semi-final.

"Obviously, playing against England is special because they are a powerhouse, and matches against powerhouses are always special."
