Supreme Court Will Decide Important Cases This Summer

June 4, 2026 · U.S. News & World Report

The nation's highest court has many big decisions to make before summer break.

The Supreme Court has many big cases to decide before summer break. The nation's highest court will make choices about voting rights, gun laws, and election rules. These decisions could change laws in many states. Some choices might affect elections coming this fall.

The Supreme Court usually finishes its work by late June. But in recent years, the justices have been releasing major decisions in early July. The court does not tell people ahead of time when they will announce their choices. This summer, they have several very important cases to decide.

One major case is about voting districts in Alabama. The Supreme Court already allowed Alabama to use a new map for elections in 2026. A lower court had said the map was unfair to Black voters. The new map spreads out Black voters across different areas. This might help Republican candidates win more seats in Congress.

President Trump has several cases before the court. In one case, he fired a member of the Federal Trade Commission before her job was supposed to end. The court will decide if presidents have the power to do this with independent agencies. Another Trump case is about birthright citizenship.

The court will also decide about transgender athletes in schools. Two states, West Virginia and Idaho, have laws that stop transgender students from playing on girls' sports teams. The athletes say these laws are not fair and break Title IX rules. The court's decision will affect similar laws in other states.

The Supreme Court's decision will determine the scope of presidential power over government agencies designed by Congress to be independent.
