The Nether: A Play That Asks Big Questions About the Internet

June 24, 2026 · The Straits Times

A Singapore theatre group is staging a gripping crime play to spark conversations about virtual reality, AI, and family violence.

A theatre company in Singapore is staging a thought-provoking play called The Nether from July 8 to 12 at the Esplanade Theatre Studio. Written by American playwright Jennifer Haley in 2013, the play is set in the year 2045, when people use virtual reality to escape the real world. It asks a big question: if someone does something wrong inside a virtual world, is it still a real crime? The show is being put on by HuM Theatre, and part of its goal is to raise awareness about family violence and child abuse in Singapore.

The Nether is described as a crime thriller, but it is much darker than a typical mystery story. In the play, a detective investigates a crime involving a child that happens inside a virtual world called The Nether. The story is set in a future where the outside world has been badly damaged, and many people choose to spend most of their lives online. This makes audiences think about how much time people today already spend on the internet.

The play raises questions that feel very real right now. With artificial intelligence growing fast and the internet becoming harder to control, the story hits close to home. One key debate in the play is whether doing something harmful in a virtual world can lead to real harm in actual life. This same argument has come up about video games and violent movies for many years.

Subin Subaiah, who adapted the play for Singapore, said the team was drawn to this debate about virtual reality and real-life behavior. He explained that the play asks whether a person can be addicted to virtual worlds and still live a normal life. He also wonders what happens when the virtual world stops feeling like enough for someone. These are questions that parents, teachers, and young people are all thinking about today.

HuM Theatre chose a multiracial cast for the show, including actors Sharda Harrison, Andrew Lua, Wan Ahmad, Janine Ng, and Subin himself. This was a careful decision based on real data from a 2025 Singapore government report. The report showed that family violence happens equally across different racial groups in the country. Subin said he did not want the play to suggest that one race is more likely to be a victim or a wrongdoer.

The cast's diversity also adds an interesting twist to the story. The detective character, played by Harrison, enters the virtual world using the avatar of a Malay man. Subin explained that this choice makes her less suspicious to others inside The Nether. It also lets her character experience things she may have missed, like a carefree childhood or feelings of complete joy.

HuM Theatre founder Daisy Irani is producing the show and wanted to make sure it would not feel like a lecture. She said the play must be entertaining first, even if it carries an important message. Daisy, who is 67 years old, handed the directing role to younger director Yogesh Tadwalkar. She recently appeared in a science-fiction comedy film and saw how much energy a younger creative team can bring to a project.

A spokeswoman for Pave, an organization that helps families affected by violence, said many people still think family violence is a private matter. This attitude means people often stay silent even when they see signs of abuse. Pave counsellors will hold conversations with the audience after each show. The spokeswoman said watching a play can be the first time someone realizes that domestic violence is real and serious.

The Nether runs at the Esplanade Theatre Studio from July 8 to 12. Show times are 7:30 pm on Wednesdays through Fridays, and 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets cost $60 and are eligible for SG Culture Pass credits. More information can be found at str.sg/N4hB.

"It's not a seminar, not a conference. Even if we want to use theatre as a social tool, it must first be entertaining because you come here to spend an evening with us."
