Politicians Fight Over Climate Change Plans in Australia

June 4, 2026 · The Sydney Morning Herald

Political parties disagree about how to create energy and fight climate change.

Australian politicians are having heated debates about climate change and energy policy. Different political parties have very different ideas about how the country should make electricity. Some want to keep using coal, while others push for wind and solar power. These disagreements are changing how political parties create their energy plans.

Barnaby Joyce, a politician from One Nation, strongly opposes wind farms in his area. He calls these wind farms 'swindle factories' because he believes they don't actually help local communities. Joyce argues that energy companies promise permanent jobs but only hire temporary workers from other places. He thinks if the wind farms really helped, his town would have grown much bigger by now.

The Liberal Party has changed its energy position several times in recent years. They used to support building nuclear power plants across Australia. Their former leader Peter Dutton wanted to spend billions on nuclear energy. Now the party focuses more on keeping coal power plants running to make electricity cheaper for families.

Scientists who study climate change denial have noticed an important shift in political talk. Politicians used to at least pretend they believed climate science, even if they opposed climate action. Now more politicians are openly rejecting what scientists say about global warming. This change is happening in Australia and other countries around the world.

I can road-test this by giving a speech in town halls, and one of the biggest claps I get is when I say 'I am going to get rid of the climate change department'.
