A 10-Year-Old Speaks Out: L.A. School Budget Cuts Are Hurting Kids' Art and Music Classes

August 14, 2026 · Los Angeles Times

When Pasadena schools had to cut teachers, one fifth-grader decided to write about what it felt like to lose music and PE.

Last school year, Pasadena Unified School District laid off more than 150 teachers and school staff. About 25 of those were art, music, dance, orchestra, and choir teachers. Librarians and counselors were also let go, leaving families and teachers feeling very upset.

Henri's school had to choose between keeping PE or keeping art. The school voted to keep art, but Henri felt the choice was unfair because she loved both. Her mother asked her to write an essay about it and shared it with readers of the Los Angeles Times.

In her essay, Henri explained why losing music class is such a big deal for kids. She wrote that some students cannot afford to pay for private music lessons or buy their own instruments. That is why school music programs are so important — they give all kids a chance to learn, no matter how much money their family has.

Henri also interviewed her best friend and neighbor, asking what kids could do about the cuts. Her friend suggested holding bake sales and lemonade stands to raise money. Henri added that students could also protest to show leaders how much these programs matter.

Henri ended her essay with a clear and powerful message about fairness and opportunity. She said that shutting down art, music, and PE takes away chances that kids deserve to have. Her mother, Jessica Gelt, said she fully supports speaking out and taking action.

"Taking away these activities is ending certain opportunities for kids."
