Kentucky Rancher Stole $170 Million in Fake Cattle Scheme

June 6, 2026 · The Wall Street Journal

Brian McClain promised huge profits to investors but most of his 87,000 cattle never existed.

A Kentucky cattle rancher named Brian McClain stole $170 million from a bank and investors in a huge fraud scheme. He told people he owned 87,000 cattle, but when officials finally counted them, they found only 8,916 animals. McClain promised investors they would make 30% profits each year by buying cattle with him. Instead, he used money from new investors to pay the old ones, which is called a Ponzi scheme.

McClain's fake business fell apart in April 2023 when an investor demanded his money back. The investor had put in $650,000 but McClain's checks bounced. The investor called the county sheriff to have McClain arrested. Before police could reach him, McClain killed himself with a gun.

Now lawyers and a bankruptcy court are trying to figure out where all the money went. They are suing the bank that lent McClain money and many of the investors who got paid. The bank, called Rabo AgriFinance, says it was tricked too. But court records show the bank ignored many warning signs for over four years.

Cattle fraud has a long history in America going back to cattle rustlers in the 1800s. Today, these crimes involve fake paperwork instead of stealing actual animals. In 2022, another rancher was sentenced for cheating Tyson Foods out of $244 million with cattle that didn't exist. Cattle are hard to count and track, which makes this type of fraud easier.

Almost all my life has been a lie about money.
