The Armageddon Economy

October 23, 2026 · The Atlantic

Two authors argue that powerful tech leaders are using global crises to grab more power — and that ordinary people need to be ready.

Writers Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor have a bold warning about powerful tech leaders. They say these leaders are using fear, artificial intelligence, and political connections to grab more control over society. The two authors appeared on the podcast Galaxy Brain, hosted by journalist Charlie Warzel, to discuss their new book, End Times Fascism. They argued that global chaos — wars, climate change, an AI boom — is actually helping a small group of wealthy people become even more powerful.

Klein and Taylor use the phrase 'end-times fascism' to describe what they see happening in the world today. Fascism is when a small group of business and political leaders join forces to protect their own wealth and power. The authors say a modern version of this is growing now, shaped by climate change, artificial intelligence, and extreme inequality. They believe the world's richest people are using today's crises to their advantage instead of trying to solve them.

One key idea from the conversation is what Klein calls the 'Armageddon economy.' This means some very wealthy people are actually making money off of bad things happening in the world. There is profit to be made in building prisons, running deportation flights, and selling surveillance tools. Klein says some people have built entire businesses around the idea that the world will stay in a permanent state of crisis.

The authors explained that AI has become almost like a faith-based technology. Companies are not selling what AI can do right now — they are selling a dream of what it might do someday. Investors pour in billions of dollars based on promises about the future, not products that exist today. Taylor compared this to a cult, where believers dig in harder when the evidence starts going against them.

Klein and Taylor also explained why many tech leaders have moved to the political right in recent years. As AI grew, tech companies feared new rules and regulations from governments and workers demanding rights. They found an ally in Donald Trump, who promised to let them build AI without restrictions. Taylor said this was a deliberate deal, not a random change of heart.

Klein argued that AI only seems appealing because society has already been weakened. When schools are overcrowded and teachers are stretched thin, an AI tutor sounds like a solution. When elderly people are lonely and isolated, a chatbot feels like company. She said the real answer is investing in schools, elder care, and human communities — not replacing people with machines.

Both authors said people need to be ready if the AI investment bubble ever bursts. They pointed to the Great Depression as an example of how crisis can lead to change. After the 1929 stock market crash, older Americans organized and demanded that the government create Social Security, which had never existed before. Klein and Taylor say that same kind of organized, determined movement could happen again today.

Taylor said the most important thing is to understand that this is not just about one billionaire or one technology. It is about an economic system that keeps putting more and more wealth into fewer and fewer hands. People need to think big — about changing retirement systems, school funding, and political campaign finance. Klein added that conversations already happening among artists and teachers about what makes human work meaningful are a hopeful sign that people are waking up.

We have to be ready with the infrastructure and with the demands that seem crazy today but might just be common sense when we make it through to the other side.
