Texas Tech Hosts Houston in Big 12 Friday Night Showdown

The No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders will host the No. 23 Houston Cougars on Friday, Sept. 18, at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. This Big 12 conference game is one of the most exciting matchups of Week 3. Both teams have big dreams of winning the Big 12 championship this season. Kickoff is set for a prime-time Friday night slot under the bright stadium lights of West Texas.

Texas Tech comes into the game with a 2-0 record, but the Red Raiders have not looked perfect. They beat Abilene Christian by 23 points and Oregon State by 11, but they were actually losing late in that Oregon State game. Quarterback Will Hammond has played well so far, completing about 77 out of every 100 passes for 487 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Running back J'Koby Williams has been the team's top offensive player, rushing for 187 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.7 yards per carry.

Houston is also off to a strong start with two wins. The Cougars needed a late push to beat Oregon State 33-20 in their first game, then blew out Southern 77-6 in Week 2. Running backs Makhi Hughes and Re'Shaun Sanford II have led Houston's offense, combining for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Texas Tech won the last meeting between these two teams by a score of 35-11 in Houston. In that game, the Red Raiders outgained the Cougars by a huge margin of 552 yards to 267 yards. The Red Raiders also enter this game with a 12-game winning streak in Big 12 conference play. That streak adds even more pressure to Friday's matchup.

There are some key players to watch on both sides. For Texas Tech, quarterback Will Hammond runs most of the plays, but veteran transfer Thomas Castellanos sometimes comes in to change things up. Running back J'Koby Williams is not just a rusher — he is also an important part of the passing game. For Houston, quarterback Conner Weigman is experienced and works well with wide receiver Amare Thomas and running back Makhi Hughes.
