Tesla Talked Up AI. Wall Street Wants to Know Where the Money Is.

July 22, 2026 · Los Angeles Times

Investors are pushing Tesla to spend more on AI and robots — or risk losing their trust.

Tesla has made a lot of big promises about artificial intelligence, self-driving cars, and robots. But many investors on Wall Street say the company needs to spend real money to back up those promises. Tesla planned to spend $25 billion on new projects in 2026, but so far it has only spent $2.5 billion. That large gap is making investors nervous about whether Tesla can actually deliver what it has promised.

Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has long painted an exciting picture of the future — one full of cars that drive themselves and robots that help around the house. But painting a picture is very different from building one. Some Wall Street experts say that if Tesla doesn't start spending more money soon, it won't be able to reach the goals it has set. Big dreams, they argue, require big budgets.

Most large tech companies are spending enormous amounts on AI right now. Four of Tesla's biggest rivals — Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft — plan to spend a combined $725 billion on new technology in 2026 alone. Those companies have sometimes been criticized for spending too much. Tesla, by contrast, is being criticized for not spending enough.

Tesla's stock has dropped 18% in 2026, making it the worst performer among the top tech stocks known as the 'Magnificent Seven.' At the same time, the stock is priced very high compared to how much money Tesla actually earns. Investors are paying a lot based on hopes for the future, not on what Tesla is doing right now. That is a risky situation if those hopes don't come true.

Tesla makes electric cars, but it also wants to build self-driving robotaxis and humanoid robots. These are physical products, which makes Tesla different from companies like Amazon or Google that mostly build software and online services. Investor Haris Khurshid said that spending money is a 'credibility check' — a way to show that a company's plans are real and not just talk.

Musk has missed deadlines before, and investors have been patient. But some experts say that patience is running out. Tesla is expected to report about $1.2 billion in profit and $26 billion in sales for the second quarter. Even though Tesla delivered a record number of cars last quarter, its stock still fell 7.5% after the news — showing that investors want more than car sales.

The pressure on Tesla is growing for another big reason. Musk's other company, SpaceX, recently went public, meaning regular people can now buy stock in it. SpaceX has huge goals, including trips to Mars and space-based data centers. If Tesla keeps missing its targets, some investors may decide SpaceX is the more exciting place to put their money.

There is also talk of a possible merger between Tesla and SpaceX someday. The two companies already share some connections, including a chip-making partnership and shared investments in AI. One expert said a publicly traded SpaceX will push Tesla to meet its deadlines more strictly and stop making empty promises. The competition between his own two companies could be exactly what forces Musk to act.

The bottom line is simple: Tesla has a bold vision, but bold visions cost money. Investors are watching closely to see if Tesla's next earnings report shows higher spending and clearer plans. If it does, the stock could rise. If it doesn't, Tesla may find it harder and harder to convince people that its future is worth the wait.

"The question isn't who's spending more, it's whether the spending is moving the company to the future it's promising."
