Sydney Beach Reopens After Shark Attack Hurts Woman

June 14, 2026 · U.S. News & World Report

Extra lifeguards and jet ski patrols watch over swimmers at popular Coogee Beach.

A popular beach in Sydney, Australia reopened on Monday with extra safety measures. Coogee Beach was closed over the weekend after a shark attacked a swimmer. The 35-year-old woman was badly hurt but is now safe in the hospital. Lifeguards and jet ski patrols are now watching the water more carefully.

The woman was swimming about 100 feet from shore on Saturday morning when the attack happened. A large shark, about 12 to 15 feet long, bit her arms and left leg. She was rushed to the hospital and is now in stable condition. The beach was closed right away to keep other swimmers safe.

Local authorities are telling swimmers to be very careful. The council will hold a community meeting about the attack on Saturday. They want to talk with local people about beach safety. Special drones are now flying over the water to spot sharks.

Coogee Beach is south of the famous Bondi Beach in Sydney. These beaches are very important to Sydney's way of life. Millions of tourists visit these beaches every year because of their beautiful golden sand and dramatic cliffs. This makes keeping swimmers safe very important for city leaders.

This shark attack was not the first one in Australia recently. In January, dozens of beaches were closed after four shark attacks happened in just two days. While shark attacks are still very rare, they have been happening more often in recent years. Heavy rain can make the water murky, which attracts sharks and makes it hard for them to see properly.

Our Lifeguards will continue JetSki patrols throughout the day, and Surf Life Saving NSW is operating a shark-spotting drone at Coogee Beach.
