Sydney Gruters, Wife of R.N.C. Chair, Wins House Primary in Florida With Trump's Backing

August 18, 2026 · The New York Times

Sydney Gruters, who has never held elected office, won her Republican primary race with strong support from President Trump.

Sydney Gruters won her Republican primary election in Florida's 16th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press. She had never run for office before, but she won by a wide margin. The district was recently redrawn and leans heavily toward Republican voters. Her win sets her up to compete for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Gruters, 44, has spent most of her career working in Republican Party politics in Florida. She has worked for members of the House of Representatives and knows the political world well. She is also married to Joe Gruters, the chairman of the Republican National Committee. He was previously a state senator and the leader of Florida's Republican Party.

President Trump gave both Sydney and Joe Gruters strong endorsements. In a July video message, Mr. Trump said Ms. Gruters was 'one of the fiercest America First advocates in the country.' That kind of support from a former president carries a lot of weight in a Republican primary. Many voters in the district supported her partly because of Trump's backing.

The 16th Congressional District covers a wide area near St. Petersburg, Florida. It includes cities, suburbs, and rural farmland, making it home to a very diverse group of voters. The state of Florida has moved more toward Republican politics in recent years. Republican Vern Buchanan held this seat for 20 years, and Gruters once worked for him.

During Trump's first term as president, he appointed Gruters to lead rural development programs for Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Later, she helped run a foundation at New College of Florida, a public college in Sarasota. The college's leadership shifted to the right under Governor Ron DeSantis. In that role, she helped New College receive millions of dollars in federal funding by supporting Trump's policies on hiring and school admissions, including ending diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

The new shape of the district was part of a statewide redistricting effort led by Governor DeSantis in 2025. The district now includes a largely Black neighborhood in St. Petersburg, the Republican-leaning city of Bradenton, and farmland important to Florida's cattle and citrus industries. It also contains the planned site of a large gas-powered data center that could cover about 1,300 acres, which would make it one of the biggest in the world. These changes made the district more Republican overall.

Gruters ran against two other candidates in the primary. Eddie Speir founded a religious school in Bradenton and was strongly against the planned data center. Ed Pope, a Navy veteran and former Florida Highway Patrol trooper, ran as a political outsider who was not connected to the usual party system. Gruters defeated both of them to claim the Republican nomination.

In a July video message, Mr. Trump said Ms. Gruters was "one of the fiercest America First advocates in the country."
