High School Sports Tournaments Bring Big Upsets on Sunday

May 31, 2026 · The Boston Globe

Lower-ranked teams knocked out favorites in baseball, softball, and lacrosse games across Massachusetts.

Sunday was a big day for high school sports in Massachusetts. Many tournaments were happening at the same time. The biggest news was that teams that were not expected to win beat teams that were supposed to be much better. This happened in baseball, softball, and lacrosse games all across the state.

Saturday had been quiet for upsets, but Sunday changed everything. Before this weekend, the higher-ranked teams had been winning most of their games. That means the teams that were expected to win actually did win. But on Sunday, several surprise victories happened that no one saw coming.

The most shocking upset was in baseball. North Quincy was ranked 35th, which means they were not expected to do well. But they beat Springfield Central, which was ranked 3rd in the whole state. Max LaMonica was the pitcher for North Quincy and struck out 10 players.

Some games had very exciting endings. Milton baseball was losing 3-2 in the last inning when Teddy Dunn came up to bat. The bases were loaded with runners. Dunn hit a grand slam home run to win the game 6-3.

No. 35 North Quincy took out No. 3 Springfield Central!
