Wildfires Threaten Canada's Oil Production

June 1, 2026 · The Independent

Seven fires burn near major oil drilling sites in northern Alberta.

Canada makes a lot of oil for the world. It is the fourth biggest oil-making country on Earth. Most of Canada's oil comes from northern Alberta's forests. These forests have always had wildfires, but now there are more fires because of climate change.

So far this year, the fires have not stopped oil companies from working. But seven fires are burning near Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche areas. Some fires are very close to big oil sites like Christina Lake and Jackfish. Weather experts said heavy rain would help firefighters put out the fires on Sunday.

On Saturday, people in a small town called Conklin had to get ready to leave their homes. But on Sunday, officials said they could stay because the danger was less. No other towns are in danger right now. However, fire officials say the risk of new fires is still extreme because the weather is warm and dry.

These fires happen every spring and summer in Canada's oil areas. This makes it hard for oil companies to plan how much oil they will make. Last year, fires forced companies to stop making 344,000 barrels of oil per day. That was about 7 percent of all the oil Canada makes.

In May 2023, companies had to stop making at least 319,000 barrels of oil per day. More than 100 wildfires were burning in Alberta at that time. This was 3.7 percent of Canada's total oil production. The worst fire happened in 2016 when a huge wildfire destroyed part of Fort McMurray town.

The recurring risk of fire in Canada's oil sands region adds a level of uncertainty to company production forecasts in the spring and summer.
