Former Health Leader Wants Tax Cuts and New Oil Drilling
Wes Streeting suggests changes to help young people find jobs and increase government money.
A former government leader named Wes Streeting has new ideas about taxes and oil drilling. He thinks the government should cut a tax called National Insurance to help businesses hire more young people. He also believes the country should allow new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea. Streeting used to be the Health Secretary but quit his job two weeks ago.
Streeting shared his ideas in a newspaper interview. He wants to challenge Sir Keir Starmer to become the new leader of the Labour Party. Since leaving his government job, Streeting has been suggesting different ideas from what the current government is doing. He has already said Britain should rejoin the European Union one day and create a new tax on wealthy people.
His latest idea is to cut National Insurance taxes in a smart way to help young people get jobs. This comes after a new report showed that too many young people are not in school, working, or training for jobs. These young people are called NEETs, which stands for 'Not in Education, Employment, or Training.' Streeting thinks businesses need help to take chances on hiring young workers.
The current government actually raised National Insurance taxes last year. They increased the tax that employers pay from 13.8% to 15% for each worker. They also made businesses start paying this tax when workers earn just $5,000 instead of $9,100. The government did this to raise $25 billion each year to improve public services like hospitals and schools.
However, some business owners told the report writer that these higher taxes made it harder for them to hire young people. The higher minimum wage also made it more expensive to hire workers. But experts who study wages said the effects on young people getting jobs are not clear. The problem of young people not finding work has been going on for many years, not just since the tax increases.
Streeting also disagrees with the government about oil and gas drilling. During the election, the Labour Party promised not to give permission for new oil and gas projects in the North Sea. They said new drilling wouldn't make energy bills cheaper and would hurt the environment. But some other political parties want more drilling because they think Britain should use its own oil and gas.
The current Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, thinks Britain will keep using oil and gas from the North Sea no matter what happens with new drilling licenses. But he wants the country to move toward cleaner energy like solar panels, wind power, and nuclear power plants. He believes this will make energy bills cheaper and help Britain have secure energy supplies in the future.
We have to make it easier for business to employ young people and for businesses to take that risk on someone.
