Fever coach blasts refs after Caitlin Clark gets technical foul in win over Sky

The Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 90–86 on Saturday, but the win came with some big drama. Star guard Caitlin Clark was called for a technical foul during the game, and head coach Stephanie White was furious about it. White was so upset that she also got a technical foul for yelling at the referee. After the game, White made it clear she thought both calls were unfair.

At a press conference after the game, a reporter asked White why Clark received the technical foul. Clark looked to her coach to explain what the referees had told her. White said the refs claimed Clark intentionally sought out the official and made contact with her arm. White strongly disagreed with that explanation.

White said her own technical foul came after she used a swear word to protest the call. She argued that she heard much worse language on the court during the game. She felt that the contact involving Clark was accidental and happens often in basketball. She said referees need to be more aware of those situations.

Clark received her eighth technical foul of the season with that call. Under WNBA rules, a player who gets eight technicals in a season receives a one-game suspension and a $1,500 fine. The Fever plan to appeal the call, which means they will ask the league to take it back. Clark hinted at this after the game when she spoke with a reporter on the court.

Clark told ESPN reporter Holly Rowe that she had already watched a video replay of the play. She said the contact was not on purpose and that she hoped the league would cancel, or rescind, the technical foul. She ended her comments by saying she expected to play in New York on Tuesday before heading back to the locker room. Her confidence suggested she believed the appeal would go in her favor.

Before Clark's contact with the referee, the Sky's DiJonai Carrington had fouled Fever player Sophie Cunningham very hard during a layup. Referees reviewed the play and ruled it a Flagrant 2 foul, which is one of the most serious types of fouls in basketball. That ruling meant Carrington was kicked out of the game. The sequence of events made an already heated game even more intense.

Clark had a strong game despite all the controversy. She scored 26 points and added 11 assists, four rebounds, two steals, and a block. Her teammate Kelsey Mitchell led the team with 27 points, hitting 11 of her 22 shot attempts. Aliyah Boston also had a great game, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

The win brought the Fever's record to 20–12, keeping them in strong position as the playoffs approach. They currently sit in fourth place in the WNBA standings, with the Atlanta Dream close behind them. Losing Clark for one game would not end their playoff hopes, but every game matters this late in the season. The Fever will want to protect their spot in the standings.
