Steelers Rookie Could Be a Great Fit With Aaron Rodgers' Offense

August 21, 2026 · Newsweek

Kaden Wetjen made a big splash in his first NFL preseason game, and Pittsburgh is taking notice.

The Pittsburgh Steelers picked Kaden Wetjen in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, and he wasted no time making an impression. In his very first preseason game, the rookie wide receiver showed fans and coaches that he can do more than just return kicks. His strong debut has people wondering how big a role he might earn with the team this season.

Wetjen only played 13 receiving snaps in his first game, but he made the most of every one. His best moment came on a 74-yard catch-and-run that nearly reached the end zone. That one big play helped him average an amazing 6.08 yards every time he ran a route, which is a very high number for any receiver, let alone a rookie.

His speed and ability to gain yards after the catch could make him a useful weapon for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is known for working well with quick, shifty receivers who can make plays in open space. Wetjen fits that description, and the two could be a good match in Pittsburgh's offense.

Right now, Wetjen's most likely path to playing time is through the return game. Returning kicks and punts is a skill he already has, and it gives him a reason to be on the field every week. For a young player still learning the NFL, getting that regular playing time is a great way to grow and improve.

If Wetjen keeps making big plays as a receiver, the Steelers will find more ways to use him on offense too. His first preseason game earned him an 88.0 grade from Pro Football Focus, a company that grades every player in the league. Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus even ranked Wetjen among the best rookies in the NFL after the first week of preseason games.

That kind of praise is impressive, especially since the Steelers have several other young players fighting for spots on the roster. Wetjen will need to keep performing well to hold onto his place. Still, a great preseason grade and a 74-yard reception are strong signs that he belongs in the conversation.

One big catch does not guarantee Wetjen a major role on the team. Coaches will need to see him make plays consistently before giving him more opportunities. Even so, his debut gave Pittsburgh something exciting to think about, both for right now and for seasons to come.

Once he's on the field, though, performances like his 74-yard reception could create chances for more offensive snaps.
