Sooners Could Have a Breakout Season in 2026

The Oklahoma Sooners football team could be one of the best teams in college football in 2026. FOX Sports has called Oklahoma a "dark horse," which means a team that people don't always expect to win but has a real shot. The Sooners bring back a lot of key players, and experts think they have what it takes to compete at the very top of the SEC — one of the toughest conferences in college football.

One big reason for the excitement is quarterback John Mateer. Last season, he played so well that some people thought he could win the Heisman Trophy, which is the biggest award for a college football player. His season was cut short because of a hand injury, but now he is healthy and ready for year two. Having a talented, experienced quarterback back on the field gives Oklahoma a huge boost.

The Sooners also return 14 starters, which is the second-most of any team in college football. That means most of the players who already know the system and played big roles last year are coming back. Teams with lots of returning starters usually have an advantage because the players don't need as much time to learn and adjust. Oklahoma is set up to hit the ground running from the very first game.

The defense could be Oklahoma's strongest weapon in 2026. Six of those returning starters play on defense, and that group was already one of the most disruptive in the entire country last season. The Sooners ranked first in the SEC by allowing just 15.5 points and 272.5 yards per game on average. They also led the conference with 45 sacks and 99 tackles for loss, meaning they regularly stopped opponents in their tracks.

On offense, Mateer's top target is wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III, and he is coming back too. Sategna had a tremendous sophomore season, finishing fourth in the SEC in receiving yards. He caught 67 passes for 965 yards and eight touchdowns, earning second-team All-SEC honors as both a receiver and an all-purpose player. He topped 100 receiving yards in four games and led the Sooners in receiving yards eight different times.

Sategna also made a big impact as Oklahoma's main punt returner. He picked up 318 return yards, which was the third-most in the entire SEC. That means he helps the team not just on offense but on special teams as well. Players who can contribute in multiple ways are very valuable to any team.

Oklahoma's schedule will not be easy, though. The Sooners travel to Michigan in Week 2 and Georgia in Week 4, then face Texas on a neutral field in Week 5. Later in the year, they will also take on Ole Miss and Texas A&M, two more tough opponents. It is one of the hardest schedules in college football, but the Sooners have the talent to handle it. If everything comes together, Oklahoma could be playing for an SEC championship by the end of the season.
