Something Unique Seems to Be Happening to the Brain During Menopause

A new study finds the female brain reacts differently to menopause than to puberty or pregnancy — and scientists say more research is needed.

Scientists have discovered something surprising about the female brain during menopause. A new study published in the journal Nature Communications found that the brain does not lose as much of its outer layer during menopause as it does during puberty or pregnancy. Researchers say this shows that hormones affect the brain in different ways at different points in a woman's life. The study is one of the first to look at how the whole brain changes during this major life event.

The brain has an outer, wrinkled layer called cortical gray matter. This layer helps people think, remember things, and control their movements. Scientists already knew that during puberty and pregnancy — two times when hormones change a lot — this layer gets thinner. But no one had closely studied what happens to the entire brain during menopause, until now.

Menopause is a natural change that happens to women, usually in their late 40s or early 50s, when their monthly periods stop for good. During this time, the body's hormone levels shift a great deal. Researchers wanted to know if those hormone changes affect the brain the same way puberty and pregnancy do. The answer, it turns out, seems to be no.

The study was led by Sophie van 't Hof, a Ph.D. student at Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands. Her team compared the brains of women going through menopause with women who had not yet started it and women who had already finished it. The researchers found very little change in the amount of gray matter in the brains of women going through menopause. This was a result that surprised many in the science world.

During puberty and pregnancy, gray matter volume tends to go down noticeably. The fact that it did not seem to drop during menopause tells scientists that the brain responds to hormones in its own unique way depending on the time of life. "No one had looked at the changes in the whole brain matter in this menopause transition before," van 't Hof said at a press conference. She called the research important for understanding how the female brain works.

Scientists are careful to note that gray matter does slowly shrink as people get older, no matter whether they are male or female. However, the study found that menopause itself does not seem to cause a sudden drop in gray matter across the whole brain. This is an important difference that helps researchers understand how hormones shape the brain at different stages of life.

The study does have some limitations. The women in the study reported their own stage of menopause, and the researchers did not confirm this with hormone tests. The results also do not fully match some earlier studies that found gray matter shrinks in a part of the brain called the hippocampus during menopause. The hippocampus plays a key role in learning and memory.

Van 't Hof said it is too early to know exactly what these brain changes mean for how women think or feel during menopause. She and her team believe more studies are needed to understand the full picture. "The exact implications are very difficult at this stage," she said. Still, many scientists are glad this kind of research is finally getting the attention it deserves, since the female brain has often been left out of major studies in the past.

"This is really fundamental research, and it's really understanding the basic brain mechanisms of the female brain. It's long been overlooked."
