Social Media Companies Pay $27 Million to Settle School District Lawsuit
Kentucky schools say social media platforms hurt students' mental health and made anxiety worse.
Four major social media companies agreed to pay a total of $27 million to settle a lawsuit filed by a Kentucky school district. The Breathitt County School District claimed that Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube were designed to be addictive. School officials said these platforms caused serious mental health problems for their students. The settlement was reached in May 2024, just weeks before the case was supposed to go to trial.
Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, paid the largest amount at $9 million. Snap Inc., which created Snapchat, agreed to pay $8 million to settle the case. ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, also paid $8 million. Google's parent company Alphabet paid $2.01 million for its YouTube platform. All four companies denied doing anything wrong but wanted to avoid a long court battle.
The school district accused these companies of deliberately making their apps addictive to keep young users online longer. Officials said this led to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among students. Teachers and counselors had to spend more time dealing with mental health crises instead of focusing on education. The district argued that social media companies should pay for the extra costs and problems they created.
Breathitt County is located in rural eastern Kentucky and serves only about 1,600 students across six schools. Despite its small size, this case was closely watched by lawyers across the country. It was the first school district lawsuit against social media companies to reach a settlement. Legal experts wanted to see how much money the companies might be willing to pay to avoid going to court.
The school district was seeking over $60 million to cover the costs of counteracting social media's impact on students' mental health.
