Sky Leaves News Company After War Coverage Criticism

May 31, 2026 · The Guardian

British broadcaster ends partnership with UAE over reports about Sudan conflict.

Sky, a British television company, is ending its business partnership with Sky News Arabia. The Arabic-language news channel has faced criticism for how it reports on the war in Sudan. Critics say the channel is not being truthful about serious violence happening in that African country. Sky will no longer own or control the channel, but the channel can still use the Sky brand name.

Sky News Arabia was created in 2010 to compete with other Arabic news channels like Al Jazeera. The channel started broadcasting across the Middle East and North Africa in 2012. It was a joint project between Sky and IMI, an investment company owned by a wealthy sheikh from the United Arab Emirates. Sky executives have grown concerned about how the channel covers regional news stories.

The main problem involves Sky News Arabia's coverage of Sudan's civil war. A military group called the Rapid Support Forces has been accused of committing genocide against certain ethnic groups. The United Arab Emirates supports this group with weapons and funding. Sky News Arabia has been accused of downplaying or hiding these serious crimes in its news reports.

In November, Sudan's government banned Sky News Arabia from operating in the country. This happened after the channel sent a news crew to El Fasher, a city in North Darfur. The channel reported that the security situation had improved there. However, the reporter who made this report is married to a senior official in the Rapid Support Forces, creating a clear conflict of interest.

Sky News Arabia continued to publish stories claiming there was no evidence supporting reports of atrocities. These reports contradicted satellite imagery and testimony from survivors of the violence. In February, a United Nations fact-finding mission concluded that the actions in Sudan showed 'hallmarks of genocide.' The UAE has denied responsibility for any crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces.

Coverage of the atrocities carried out in Sudan by the UAE-backed paramilitary group has been accused of whitewashing genocide.
