SK Hynix Makes Its Big U.S. Stock Market Debut

July 10, 2026 · Reuters

The South Korean chipmaker's U.S. listing is seen as a major test of how much investors still believe in the AI boom.

A major South Korean computer chip company called SK Hynix began trading its shares on a U.S. stock exchange on Friday. The company raised about $26.5 billion by selling shares to investors around the world. This debut is being watched closely because it could show whether investors still strongly believe in the growth of artificial intelligence, or AI. SK Hynix is one of the most important companies in the AI industry, and its U.S. arrival is a big deal for technology markets.

SK Hynix makes a special type of computer chip called high-bandwidth memory, or HBM. These chips are needed to power the advanced processors that run AI programs. Companies like Nvidia and AMD use HBM chips in their products. Because AI technology is growing so fast, HBM chips have become hard to find, which has pushed up their price and made SK Hynix very valuable.

The company's stock price had already risen 650% compared to just one year ago. However, chip stocks have slipped a bit in recent weeks as some investors worry that AI spending might slow down. SK Hynix shares had dropped about 25% from their all-time high just two weeks before the U.S. debut. Even with that dip, the company remains one of the most talked-about stocks in the world.

SK Hynix sold its U.S. shares, called American Depositary Receipts, or ADRs, at $149 each. Ten of these ADRs are equal to one regular share of the company. The price was set slightly higher than the average share price from the last three trading days. On the same day in Seoul, South Korea, the company's shares rose about 2.2%.

The U.S. listing is the second-largest share sale in the country after SpaceX's record IPO last month. By listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange, SK Hynix can now reach millions of American investors. Experts say this will help the company be valued more like its U.S. rival Micron Technology. Micron's stock has jumped 711% over the past year, and analysts think SK Hynix deserves a similar level of attention.

Right now, SK Hynix trades at about 6.8 times its expected future earnings, while Micron trades at about 13 times. That gap exists partly because SK Hynix was only listed in South Korea before. Being on Nasdaq makes it easier for U.S. investors to buy and sell its stock. Experts believe this wider access could help raise SK Hynix's value over time.

The AI industry is spending enormous amounts of money on new technology and buildings called data centers. Analysts expect global spending on AI systems to reach nearly $1.5 trillion by 2027, which would be 40% to 50% more than today. Tech giants are borrowing money and selling stock to pay for all of this growth. This spending boom is a big reason why chip companies like SK Hynix have become so valuable.

Still, not everyone is sure the boom will last forever. Some experts worry that tech companies are spending more than they will ever earn back from AI. If that happens, the big companies might cut back on spending, which could hurt chip makers. One analyst said there is always a risk that too many chips get made and prices fall.

Thomas Hayes, a money manager in New York, said that semiconductor stocks are the most popular trade in the world right now. He believes SK Hynix chose this moment on purpose to take advantage of high investor interest. If the debut goes well, it could encourage other companies to list their shares in the U.S. But if investors are not impressed, it could signal that the AI stock craze is starting to cool down.

This is the purest large-cap way for U.S. investors to own the AI-memory theme.
