Shohei Ohtani's Bat Has Gone Quiet, but the Dodgers Keep Winning for Now

October 9, 2026 · U.S. News & World Report

The Los Angeles Dodgers are still advancing in the playoffs even as their biggest star struggles to hit the ball.

Shohei Ohtani is one of the best baseball players in the world, but he has not been playing like it lately. The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar has been struggling at the plate during this year's playoffs. Even so, the Dodgers have kept winning, and they are now heading into the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

In the first playoff round, called the NL Division Series, the Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves in four games. Ohtani only got two hits in thirteen at-bats during that series, which is a very low batting average of .154. He also dealt with injuries to his right biceps and left knee that limited how well he could swing the bat.

Ohtani's manager, Dave Roberts, moved him to different spots in the batting order during the series. For one game, Ohtani batted fifth, which was the lowest spot he had ever hit in the lineup as a Dodger. Roberts made these changes based on strategy, not as a punishment for playing poorly.

Ohtani has said that he is not fully healthy right now. He missed some games during the regular season because of his arm and knee problems. He has admitted that he is still figuring out what is causing his struggles at the plate, and he expects to work on it more during the offseason when he has extra time.

One big problem has been that Ohtani is swinging at too many pitches outside of the strike zone. When a batter swings at bad pitches, it is very hard to get hits. Roberts has said he hopes Ohtani does a better job of being patient and waiting for good pitches to swing at.

Despite Ohtani's slump, Roberts has not lost confidence in his star player. He believes that Ohtani's bat will wake up as the Dodgers go deeper into the playoffs. The team's strong pitching staff has helped pick up the slack while Ohtani finds his swing.

Last year, Ohtani was outstanding against the Brewers in the same playoff round. He hit five for fourteen with three home runs and was named the series MVP. In one amazing game, he also struck out ten batters as a pitcher — but he will not be pitching this postseason because of his injuries.

This year, pitchers like Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow will lead the Dodgers on the mound. Good pitching can take a team far in the playoffs. But if the Dodgers' hitters, especially Ohtani, keep struggling, the team will have very little room for mistakes as the competition gets tougher.

"It's hard to have success when you're out of the zone."
